WHAT IS UNEVEN SKIN TONE?
Uneven skin tone is an irregular darkening of the skin. Melanin, the pigment responsible for skin and hair color, is produced in excess. This results in dark spots and patches and is easily perceived as aging skin. Research confirms that hyperpigmentation from excess melanin can make you look 12 years older! No thanks to that! At Wow Medi Spa, we have treatments to help even out your skin tone so you can look young!
WHAT CAUSES UNEVEN SKIN?
There are 4 elements involved in causing uneven skin tone: sun exposure, hormones, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and pollution.- Sun exposure: when you are exposed to excess UV light the body tries to protect against skin damage and produces too much melanin. This causes brown spots and uneven tone.
- Hormones: Uneven skin that results from a hormone imbalance is known as Melasma. This can occur from changes in hormones during pregnancy or from taking oral contraceptives. It usually reverses itself after labor and the discontinuance of oral contraceptive use, though sometimes it may linger.
- Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation: This results from acne or injury-induced scarring. In fact, an insect bite may cause inflammation and irritation leading to a raised bump that can cause scarring if scratched — that’s one instance of Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation.
- Pollution: Air pollution may penetrate the skin leading to the development of dark spots that usually show up on the face.
